KUALA LUMPUR – The egg subsidy will be reduced starting tomorrow and fully discontinued starting August 1.
The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, in a statement, announced that starting tomorrow, price controls on eggs will be lifted, and the subsidy will be reduced from RM0.10 to RM0.05 per egg, before the full subsidy removal happens in August.
This was decided after considering the industry’s commitment to ensuring sufficient and stable egg production, following stabilised production costs.
“This was evident during the recent Aidilfitri festive season, where supply remained sufficient and prices were competitive,” the statement added.
The Agriculture Ministry said the government’s decision to end egg subsidies and price controls took into account the long-term sustainability of the local egg industry and national finances.
“From February 2022 to December 2024, the government spent nearly RM2.5 billion on egg subsidies to support the industry, covering increased production costs due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war on the prices of imported soybeans and corn,” the ministry said.
It added that the current subsidy structure is not equitable, as it also benefits foreign nationals and high-income groups. A restructured system, the ministry said, would be fairer and more targeted.
Savings from this move will be channelled into specific programmes to improve public welfare, in line with Madani values.
The ministry also announced a series of intervention measures to cushion the impact of this decision, in collaboration with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).
Among them, the egg industry has committed to introducing special-grade eggs at affordable prices. Consumers will also be able to purchase eggs at competitive prices through Agro Madani and Rahmah Sale initiatives, available nationwide, including at all Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority and Farmers’ Organisation Authority outlets.
Meanwhile, KPDN will strengthen enforcement through continuous monitoring under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (AKHAP 2011) to prevent price manipulation and profiteering.
