KUALA LUMPUR — The federal government has approved RM40 million to rebuild and repair homes damaged in a gas pipeline explosion earlier this month in Putra Heights, Selangor.

According to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the funds will go towards 219 homes affected by the April 1 blast, which left dozens of families displaced.

Of these, 81 homes were classified as completely destroyed, while 138 sustained partial damage.

“For homes deemed completely destroyed — where structural damage exceeds 40% — each household will receive up to RM300,000 to rebuild,” said Amirudin in a statement today.

“Those with less severe damage will receive up to RM150,000, while another 57 homes requiring only minor repairs are eligible for RM30,000 each.”

The money will be channelled through the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

Construction in the Taman Putra Harmoni area will be led by original developer Sime Darby, while Syarikat Perumahan Nasional Berhad (SPNB) will oversee repairs in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru.

Both firms are expected to begin work on site from May 1.

The state government also announced RM2.73 million in rental aid to support 455 affected families for three months while their homes are rebuilt.

Each family will receive RM2,000 a month from April to June to cover temporary housing costs.

“This assistance is meant to give families breathing room as they begin rebuilding their lives,” said Amirudin.

“We know that the trauma of this incident will take time to heal, and we are committed to supporting victims through every stage of recovery.”

He added that the Putra Heights Recovery Committee has been tasked with overseeing construction timelines and cost management, while the state health department is monitoring the condition of victims still undergoing hospital treatment.

“Some residents are still receiving care, and may require surgery or skin grafts,” said Amirudin, adding that Selangor health executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin has been appointed to coordinate medical support for victims.

He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Housing Minister Nga Kor Ming for their cooperation and federal support. — April 30, 2025
