KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has extended his congratulations to Catholics around the world, particularly in Malaysia, following the election of Pope Leo XIV.
“This historic occasion marks a new chapter for the global Catholic community. I am confident it will be a source of renewed purpose and inspiration,” he said in an Instagram post today.
“Malaysia values its ties with the Holy See, and we look forward to continued engagement rooted in mutual respect, dialogue, and our shared commitment to peace and human dignity.”
Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, was elected on Wednesday, May 8, at around 6.07pm Vatican City time (12.07am, Thursday, Malaysian time) when white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney – signalling the successful conclusion of the conclave.
The 69-year-old Chicago-born Augustinian is the first American to ascend to the papacy. His election was decided by 133 cardinal electors – the largest number in the Church’s history – including Malaysia’s Cardinal Sebastian Francis, Bishop of Penang.
Local media estimated 150,000 people had gathered in St Peter’s Square to witness the white smoke and the “Habemus Papam” declaration, welcoming the new pontiff.
