KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has inspected the premises of an individual as part of an ongoing investigation into an offensive post made on social media, leading to a seizure of a mobile phone and SIM card.
In a statement today, MCMC said the seizure was carried out to assist with investigations into content uploaded on the individual’s Facebook account, believed to contain offensive material related to 3R elements – religion, race, and royalty.
The probe is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998), which covers the offence of transmitting obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive content with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person.
MCMC said the inspection followed the issuance of a search warrant by the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court under Section 247 of the same Act.
“In addition, a data preservation session and a statement recording were conducted at the Pudu Police Station on May 9. Earlier, the individual also presented themselves at MCMC headquarters to provide a statement related to the investigation,” the commission said.
MCMC stressed that all actions taken were in accordance with the legal provisions under CMA 1998, and urged the public to allow space for the investigation to be carried out transparently and thoroughly. – May 10, 2025
