Don’t incite hate, real fight is in GE16: Fahmi tells PKR candidates

Party info chief reminds members that party was ‘born from the streets’, highlighting its resilience and calling for unity

KUALA LUMPUR – PKR candidates have been reminded to avoid sowing division during the party polls, as the real challenge lies in defeating the “real opponent” at the next general election.

PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil urged contenders to campaign with restraint and remember that unity would be key in facing the opposition in GE16.

“This election is a sibling rivalry of sorts. No matter who wins or loses on May 24, we must regroup and strengthen ourselves for the general election ahead,” he said during a grassroots event in Shah Alam yesterday.

Fahmi, who is also communications minister and vying for a seat in the central leadership council (MPP), stressed the importance of maintaining party cohesion.

“I urge everyone, do not sow hatred toward other candidates during the campaign. After all, we will need each other once this is over,” he said.

He described PKR as a party “born from the streets” – resilient and unyielding – and said its members must carry that spirit forward as a united front.

The event in Section 7 was attended by PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is contesting the deputy president post, Selangor Menteri Besar and incumbent vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, and other MPP and Youth candidates.

Fahmi also voiced his support for Nurul Izzah and said party president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had assured there would be no changes to the federal leadership after the party elections.

“I believe none of us wants to burden the thoughts of our president, because he is working hard for the country, and he is the right man, in the right place, at the right time for all of us and for the nation,” he added.

The PKR central leadership election will be held on May 23, from 8am to 5pm, via a hybrid voting system.

Physical voting will take place at Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and Danga Bay Convention Centre in Johor Baru, while delegates in Sabah and Sarawak will vote at the ITCC in Penampang and the Penview Convention Centre in Kuching, respectively.

Delegates not required to vote in person may cast their ballots online using the ADIL app.

The PKR National Congress, including the Youth and Wanita wings, will run from May 22 to 24 in Johor Bahru. – May 15, 2025
