KL, brace for traffic: police to run Asean-GCC convoy drill on May 21,22

Simulation will be during peak hours as it follows actual summit schedule and uses main roads linked to official venues, including KLCC, Istana Negara

KUALA LUMPUR – Police will carry out a two-day convoy simulation in Kuala Lumpur on May 21 and 22, ahead of the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (Asean-GCC) Summit 2025.

The drill, which starts tomorrow during peak hours, involves the movement of official convoys between key locations in the capital. The simulation will follow the actual summit schedule and use the main roads linked to official venues, hence the timing.

In a statement, police said routes affected include travel from hotels to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) between 7.30am and 9am; KLCC to Istana Negara for a royal banquet from 11.30am to 1pm; and hotels to the gala dinner venue between 6.30pm and 8pm.

“The exercise on May 21 involves the movement of Asean member states’ convoys, while May 22 will involve GCC member states,” the statement said.

On Sunday, local media reported that six highways and 25 major roads in the city will be closed or diverted in phases this week in conjunction with the 46th Asean Summit. – May 20, 2025
