KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has taken possession of the Ilham Tower, situated on Jalan Binjai, for the second time.

This 60-storey building was initially confiscated in December 2023 under Section 38(1) of the MACC Act 2009 (Act 694) and Section 376(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

In a statement today, MACC said it had obtained permission from the deputy public prosecutor.

It explained that the seizure was made based on a Notice of Seizure of Immovable Property under Section 51(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001) dated today.

“Through this notice, the seizure permission was made based on the power granted to the Public Prosecutor under Section 376(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593) where the deputy public prosecutor is satisfied with the information provided by the MACC Officer that it relates to an offence under subsection 4(1) AMLATFPUAA 2001,” the statement read.

Accordingly, MACC said, the Ilham Tower building was ordered to be seized by its Investigating Officer, and all dealings relating to the transfer of ownership of the immovable property are now prohibited – and failure to comply with the notice is an offence under AMLATFPUAA 2001.

Meanwhile, the 274-metre-high Ilham Tower was completed in 2015.

It houses a four-star hotel, official offices, a gallery, a food court, and souvenir shops, with 33 floors dedicated to office space and the remainder used as apartments.

On Tuesday, the Kuala Lumpur High Court granted the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) permission to freeze seven properties and a bank account worth £132 million (RM758.2 million) belonging to Daim’s wife, Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid, and her family.

The assets frozen include three luxury residences and two commercial buildings in London.

Judge Azhar Abdul Hamid issued the order after granting an application submitted in ex-parte proceedings.

MACC Chief Commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, reportedly said the action was taken to prevent the assets from being disposed of. – June 5, 2025
