KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian-born actress Pik-Sen Lim, best known internationally for her role as Su-Lee in the British sitcom ‘Mind Your Language’, has died at the age of 80.
Her death on June 9 was confirmed by close friend and fellow actor Daniel York Loh in a tribute posted on social media.
Born in Penang in 1944, Lim was among the earliest Malaysian talents to make a name in British television, film, and theatre.
A fixture on UK screens from the 1970s onward, her breakout performance came in ‘Mind Your Language’ (1977–1979), where her comedic timing and distinctive voice made her a fan favourite.
Lim moved to the UK in the early 1960s at the age of 16 and trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).
Over her five-decade career, she appeared in acclaimed productions such as ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Johnny English Reborn’, and more recently, lent her voice to video games including ‘Dark Souls’.
She also held a rare distinction as one of the few Malaysian actresses of her generation to consistently secure work in British theatre and television despite the industry’s notorious lack of diversity.
Actor and playwright Daniel York Loh paid tribute to her as a “joyous person, full of love, laughter and mischief”, describing her as a mentor and trailblazer who was unafraid to speak out against racial barriers in the industry.
“Her gift for comedy was such that you always felt safe in front of an audience with her,” he wrote.
Lim is survived by her daughter Sara Houghton. — June 13, 2025
