PUTRAJAYA — Malaysians in Iran are expected to be evacuated on Friday amid escalating tensions following Israel’s recent aggressive actions towards the country.
Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said preparations are underway to ensure the safe departure of Malaysian citizens from Iran.
“Foreign Minister (Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan) briefed the Cabinet today on the latest developments regarding the situation in Iran.
“He informed us that the number of Malaysians in Iran — including students and tourists — is not large, but arrangements are being made for them to leave the country.
“All visa arrangements have been finalised. God willing, they are expected to begin their journey out of Iran within the next day or two, likely on June 20,” Fahmi said during his weekly press briefing today.
When asked whether the government has an evacuation plan in place, Fahmi — who is also the Communications minister — confirmed that one exists.
“Yes, preparations are in place, but as this involves security matters, I cannot disclose the details,” he added.
On Tuesday, Wisma Putra issued a statement urging all Malaysians in Iran to leave the country immediately via any safe and available means.
The Foreign Ministry, which is monitoring the security situation through the Malaysian Embassy in Tehran, said the situation on the ground is increasingly volatile.
“Given the deteriorating conditions, all Malaysians currently in Iran are advised to leave immediately via any safe and available channels.
“The current situation is highly unpredictable and could worsen without warning.
“The safety and welfare of Malaysian citizens remain the ministry’s top priority,” the statement read. — June 18, 2025
