KLIA Aerotrain service resumes after brief suspension due to tunnel flooding

Operations restored within 75 minutes after technical fault in drainage pump triggered safety halt amid heavy rain

KUALA LUMPUR — The newly resumed Aerotrain service at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) was back on track this afternoon following a brief suspension due to heavy rainfall that caused water to accumulate in its tunnel system.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said the disruption began at 11am today when a drainage pump fault prevented water from being cleared automatically, triggering a temporary halt in operations as a safety measure.

“The tunnel’s drainage system includes pumps designed to manage water ingress during severe weather. However, one of the pumps experienced a technical fault,” MAHB said in a statement.

The Aerotrain resumed operations at 12.15pm after manual clearing efforts and full safety inspections were completed. In the interim, transport to the satellite terminal remained uninterrupted, with shuttle buses deployed to ensure passenger movement continued smoothly.

Today’s incident marks the first operational hiccup since the much-anticipated Aerotrain was officially brought back online on July 1.

The RM742 million system, which had been suspended since March 2023 due to technical faults,

is currently in its early stages of service, with authorities still closely monitoring performance and reliability.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke previously said the new system underwent rigorous testing, including emergency response simulations, before reopening to the public.

The Aerotrain now features upgraded three-carriage trains with a capacity of 270 passengers per trip, and two train sets operating in rotation while a third remains on standby.

The system’s revival comes at a critical time as Malaysia prepares to host Asean meetings and gears up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

MAHB reiterated its commitment to providing a safe and seamless travel experience at KLIA, saying technical teams will continue to monitor the Aerotrain system and rectify the faulty pump to ensure optimal performance during future weather events.

“We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we fine-tune this new system,” the airport operator said. — July 4, 2025
