Johari dismisses talk of replacing Anwar as prime minister

Umno vice-president urges critics not to disrupt the unity government, says talk of him receiving party support is baseless

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has dismissed speculation that he is a candidate to replace Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.

Johari, who also serves as Plantation and Commodities minister, said the current unity government is peaceful and stable, and should not be disrupted.

He also rejected claims that he has received backing from Umno MPs for the top post.

“How could I have support (to be appointed prime minister) when Umno only has 26 MPs?” he told reporters at a press conference today.

“I want to stress that this unity government is peaceful and stable. Don’t interfere with the current administration.

“If anyone is dissatisfied, wait for the next general election,” he added, referring to the 16th general election.

Earlier, Johari had met with traders and residents over the proposed demolition of several food stalls along Jalan 2/76 in Desa Pandan in Kuala Lumpur.

Political observers had previously floated his name as a potential candidate to lead Putrajaya should there be a change in leadership. — July 17, 2025
