KUALA LUMPUR — In a touching event that highlighted the values of unity and camaraderie, Cardinal Sebastian Francis was hosted for an evening tea by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Nor and senior PAS ulamas.

Cardinal Sebastian expressed deep gratitude for the menteri besar’s presence and the continued support from local leaders.

“This gathering is not merely a social event; it is a testament to the bonds we forge when faith and civic leadership work hand in hand,” he said in his speech.

Offering reflections on the Catholic community’s history in Kedah, Cardinal Sebastian highlighted the arrival of the first Catholic community from Phuket, Thailand, in 1781, and the establishment of St. Michael’s Church in 1920, which remains a spiritual cornerstone for many.

In his speech, Cardinal Sebastian acknowledged the importance of fostering relationships among different faiths.

“Kedah is a state rich in culture and history, and it is this diversity that makes us stronger,” he said, pointing to the collaborative efforts between faith communities aimed at addressing societal challenges.

The tea party also spotlighted personal stories from local Catholics who have formed friendships with individuals from different religious backgrounds.

The gathering also served as a reminder of the Catholic community’s contributions to Kedah’s vibrant culture, from educational initiatives to participation in charitable events. Historically, the Catholic Church in the region has established not only St. Michael’s Church but also Christ the King Church in Sg. Petani and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Kulim, along with several smaller chapels across the state.

Looking towards the future, the Cardinal announced plans for upcoming interfaith dialogues, encouraging participants to engage in discussions that would foster deeper connections and collaboration.

“As we move forward, let us strive for greater understanding and friendship among our communities,” he urged, emphasising the need for solidarity in addressing contemporary issues.

The afternoon concluded on a hopeful note, with both religious and civic leaders expressing their commitment to building on the foundations of unity and cooperation laid during this memorable gathering.

The event’s atmosphere was charged with optimism, signifying a shared vision of a peaceful and inclusive Kedah. — July 22, 2025
