No credible proof Jho Low is in Shanghai: Saifuddin Nasution

Home Minister says claims about fugitive’s alleged presence in China and use of a fake passport remain unverified, despite recent reports by two investigative journalists

KUALA LUMPUR – There is currently no credible evidence confirming that fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, is residing in an upscale area of Shanghai, China, using a fake Australian passport.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the claims made by investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright remain, for now, just part of their reporting.

“So far, I would say the allegations concerning his whereabouts and the use of the said passport have not been supported by any verified or substantiated facts.

“If such evidence emerges, we’ll say so. If not, we have to state clearly that it doesn’t exist.

“The media report remains, at this stage, merely the account of the journalists involved,” he said during an official visit to the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at Sasana Kijang today.

Saifuddin added that the Home Ministry, through the police, continues to maintain strong and ongoing cooperation with international enforcement and regulatory agencies.

“Our close collaboration with foreign agencies is ongoing,” he said.

Previously, the media reported that Hope had claimed Jho Low is currently living in Green Hills, a high-end neighbourhood in Shanghai.

The fugitive financier is also said to be using a fake Australian passport under a Greek alias to conceal his identity.

These details were published in an article by Hope titled RICH LIST: Playboy Financier Jho Low Turned International Fugitive, released on the Whale Hunting website on 18 July.

In the article, Hope also alleged that Jho Low serves as a shadow strategist to the Chinese government, assisting companies under international sanctions to continue operating globally.

On Tuesday, Tom Wright posted on X that Jho Low had used a fake Australian passport to register a company in the United Kingdom.

Wright shared documents linked to the UK-based entity that matched the name, birth month, and birth year of the wanted businessman.

He also said newly received information suggests Jho Low may be linked to several corporate entities in the United States, as well as other associations in Hong Kong. – July 24, 2025
