KUALA LUMPUR – Several Members of Parliament representing the Indian community have expressed disappointment and called on the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to reconsider its decision not to prosecute independent preachers Zamri Vinoth and Firdaus Wong Wai Hung, citing insufficient evidence.
Deputy MIC president Datuk Seri M Saravanan, who is also Tapah MP, said the matter had caused considerable unease and should have been handled with greater sensitivity by the government.
He was referring to the written parliamentary reply from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said on Tuesday, which confirmed the AGC’s decision.
Saravanan said Azalina ought to have consulted with Indian MPs before announcing the outcome.
“As a minister, she should have initiated discussions with us beforehand. We are part of the Unity Government and support the Madani administration.
“Ministers must be aware that such issues touch on the sentiments of the Indian community. Our hope is that the minister will engage with us in future so we can understand the matter in depth,” he told reporters after the morning sitting of Parliament today.
His sentiments were echoed by Klang MP Ganabatirau Kesavan, who said lawmakers unanimously rejected the justification offered by the AGC.
“We reject this explanation. Numerous police reports have been lodged, and there is ample evidence in the form of videos, public statements and social media posts which have circulated widely.
“These materials have caused public unease and contain elements of insult and incitement that touch on racial and religious sensitivities.”
Ganabatirau said the decision not to proceed with charges raises concerns over selective enforcement, and challenges the principle of equality before the law enshrined in Article 8 of the Federal Constitution.
“The law must not be applied selectively. Any form of insult, hatred or incitement against any race or religion must be addressed firmly and fairly, regardless of who is responsible.
“We urge the Attorney-General’s Chambers to reassess this decision objectively, based on the available evidence, in order to preserve public confidence in the justice system,” he said.
Previously, police arrested Zamri Vinoth over a Facebook post believed to have disturbed public order.
Last year, Firdaus Wong said he had been called in to assist with a police investigation following a report lodged against him. – July 24, 2025
