Jendela expansion: MCMC to improve connectivity in rural Gua Musang

The commission proposes new tower, upgrades for Gua Musang mobile access

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is moving to resolve the lack of mobile coverage in Kampung Sungai Relai, Gua Musang, after confirming the area is without service.

Following a recent site inspection, MCMC found that while a 76-metre tower exists, it only serves as a microwave backhaul link and does not provide direct mobile coverage to residents.

“A cellular quality of service test confirmed there is no mobile coverage in the village,” the commission said in a statement today.

In response, MCMC has issued a Section 51(2) notice under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to service providers that failed to meet coverage obligations.

To address the issue, a new tower site has been proposed under the Jalinan Digital Negara (Jendela) initiative. Discussions are also ongoing with telcos to upgrade the existing tower to support 4G coverage via fibre-optic connectivity.

MCMC said it will continue monitoring the rollout to ensure residents gain access to reliable mobile services. — July 30, 2025
