KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that US President Donald Trump has committed to attending the Asean Summit in October.

Anwar made the announcement in Parliament today, ahead of presenting the 13th Malaysia Plan. He revealed that he had spoken with Trump earlier this morning, during which they discussed ongoing trade negotiations and tariff matters.

“President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will attend the Asean Summit later in October,” Anwar said in his address to the Dewan Rakyat.

Malaysia is hosting the summit as the current chair of Asean.

Trump to announce tariff rates tomorrow

In addition, Anwar shared that Trump will announce Malaysia’s new tariff rates tomorrow, August 1, after postponing the announcement from today. This decision came after their conversation earlier in the day.

“Following our call, he chose to delay the tariff announcement until tomorrow. God-willing, this will ease the situation and not negatively impact our economy,” said Anwar during his speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan.

Anwar also highlighted that the tariff discussions with Trump were conducted within the framework of free trade principles.

Trump praises Anwar for mediation efforts

On a separate note, Anwar revealed that Trump had congratulated him for his role in mediating the ongoing crisis between Thailand and Cambodia.

“This achievement was made possible due to the Asean consensus, as well as the cooperative efforts of both Thailand and Cambodia, alongside the support of the US and China, particularly from Presidents Trump and Xi Jinping,” Anwar added. – July 31, 2025
