Tariff reduction and ceasefire reflect Malaysia’s progress under Anwar’s strong leadership: Loke

KUALA LUMPUR – The recent reduction of the reciprocal tariff rate imposed by the United States and the successful mediation of the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia demonstrate Malaysia’s advancement under the steady leadership of the current government under Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, according to DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

Loke, who is also the Transport Minister, noted that with the rise of protectionist trade policies globally, the US’s decision to reduce tariffs from 25% to 19% marks a strategic and pragmatic move by Malaysia. The reduction minimises the tariff’s impact while preserving crucial diplomatic channels.

“Tariff reduction for Malaysia marks reduced tensions from the threats of high tariffs (set) earlier to a more balanced outcome of negotiations,” he said, adding that the new rate aligns with those imposed on other Southeast Asian countries.

Despite Malaysia’s higher trade surplus with the US compared to other nations in the region, Loke highlighted that the tariff reduction demonstrates the country’s continued competitiveness in the global market.

“Despite the fact that Malaysia’s trade surplus with the US is higher when compared with other countries in the region, the new rate shows that Malaysia relatively remains competitive,” he noted.

Loke also emphasised Malaysia’s success in brokering the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, and securing a commitment from US President Donald Trump to attend the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, marking a significant recognition of Malaysia’s leadership within ASEAN. He described these developments as a “clear sign” of Malaysia’s growing influence in the regional strategic balance.

“Under the leadership of the Madani government, Malaysia has shaped ASEAN as a regional organisation that is more solid and influential,” Loke added.

The Seremban MP further praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for positioning Malaysia as a trusted partner in promoting regional security through pragmatic, patient, and constructive approaches.

“The Madani government not only has gained tangible economic benefits for the country, but also increased Malaysia’s standing on the global stage and worked hard in fostering regional peace and security,” Loke said.

“Based on these achievements, it is clear that Malaysia is moving forward with efficient, prudent administrative direction, and we are also working on unleashing our role as a ‘middle power nation’, as well as creating new strategic spaces for Malaysia to move forward.” – August 2, 2025
