MCMC investigates viral video exploiting homeless man

Commission condemns unethical content targeting vulnerable groups; warns public against spreading provocative material online

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened an investigation into a viral video showing social media influencers allegedly handing leftover food to a homeless man — an act that has drawn public outrage.

In a statement today, MCMC described the content as exploitative and dehumanizing, condemning the creators for using vulnerable communities to gain views and stir public emotions.

“MCMC views such content creation and dissemination as unethical and damaging to public morality. Normalising such behavior threatens to erode compassion in society,” the commission said.

The public has been urged not to circulate provocative or offensive content, with MCMC warning that offenders could face prosecution under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum penalty of RM500,000 or two years’ imprisonment.

The MCMC reiterated its resolve to maintain a safe and respectful online environment. – August 5, 2025
