KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is confident that a return of Indian voters’ support to MIC will result in more party representatives in both Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies (DUN).
He stated that this is achievable due to MIC’s strong influence and its well-established, systematic organisational structure.
“I am confident that if Indian voters decide to back MIC once again, the party will have more representatives in Parliament and DUN,” said Zahid, who is also the Umno President.
“MIC’s influence is extensive, and I am certain that their future remains bright, just as it has been since the days of the Alliance government until today.”
Zahid also emphasised the longstanding alliance between Umno and MIC, stressing the importance of maintaining this strong partnership.
This remark follows comments made by MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri M Saravanan, who expressed dissatisfaction over the party’s lack of positions in the government and government-linked companies (GLCs), despite the presence of senior leadership.
Saravanan had previously stated that MIC felt overlooked, with no roles in the government or GLCs despite having capable leaders.
He added that the party would decide on its next steps following its annual general meeting in October.
In related developments, PAS Information Chief Dr Balachandran Gopal Krishnan recalled MIC’s previous collaboration with PAS under the past administration, signalling a willingness to revive this cooperation.
He noted that both MIC and PAS had formed a government under former Prime Ministers Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Meanwhile, PAS Spiritual Leader Datuk Hashim Jasin expressed openness to cooperating with both MIC and MCA within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, reiterating that the party has no issues working with multiple parties, except DAP.
However, he added that such cooperation would need further discussions within the coalition’s leadership. – August 5, 2025.
