KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the recently passed Gig Workers Bill 2025 as a “victory” for more than a million Malaysians in the sector, calling it a “gift” to young people who form the backbone of the gig economy.
In a video statement posted on his social media, Anwar said the bill provides clearer definitions for gig work, alongside stronger recognition, social protection, and a more secure future for delivery riders, e-hailing drivers, and others in the industry.
“Alhamdulillah, this is a victory for gig workers, in line with the spirit of Merdeka – to free them from pressure, to listen and to respond to their demands as promised,” he said.
He acknowledged that the legislative process had been lengthy and met with resistance, but expressed gratitude that the concerns of gig workers had not only been addressed but also carefully considered.
Anwar also thanked Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, his ministry, and colleagues in government for their consistent support in advancing the bill.
The Gig Workers Bill 2025, which covers more than 1.2 million workers, was passed in the Dewan Rakyat last Thursday after seven years of drafting.
It allows gig workers the right to negotiate pay and working conditions and was debated by 23 MPs from both government and opposition benches before its approval. — August 30, 2025
