KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu’s Annual General Assembly (AGM) was thrown into chaos at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam on this evening after a brief scuffle broke out during party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s keynote address.

The disruption occurred in the middle of the hall, believed to involve a group of delegates expressing dissatisfaction.

The situation escalated quickly, with shouts of “Turun Tan Sri” (“Down with Tan Sri”) mixed with “Hidup Tan Sri” (“Long live Tan Sri”) as tempers flared. Security personnel swiftly intervened to restore order.

Despite the brief altercation, Muhyiddin, the former prime minister and Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, continued with his address after the atmosphere was calmed.

He had been speaking on the importance of internal unity and Bersatu’s future within the PN coalition when the unrest began.

The commotion reportedly stemmed from a small group of delegates who were allegedly displeased with the party leadership.

Muhyiddin later made it clear that any attempt to undermine the president through statutory declarations (SDs) was unconstitutional.

“I hear some are collecting signatures to overthrow the party president. This goes against the party constitution,” Muhyiddin said, as quoted by The Star.

“If the president can be brought down with a collection of signatures, those (Bersatu leaders) on the stage with me can also be overthrown the same way,” he added.

The unrest continued briefly, with one delegate loudly shouting that the allegations were untrue, prompting security to intervene once again. Following the confrontation, a few other delegates stood up and began chanting “Long live Tan Sri!” in support of Muhyiddin.

There had been prior discussions and speculation about statutory declarations from Bersatu division leaders calling for Muhyiddin to step down as party president. However, the president was quick to remind party members of the importance of adhering to Bersatu’s constitution.

“Obey the party’s constitution if we want our party to be orderly, proper, harmonious and peaceful,” Muhyiddin urged.

“Stop the slander and incitement. Avoid conflicts among ourselves. Discard all negative attitudes that weaken us. Remember, our party did not begin with wealth and money, nor with promises of positions and status. We started with nothing,” he continued.

In his speech, Muhyiddin also touched on Bersatu’s preparations for the upcoming Sabah state elections, highlighting the party’s commitment to fight for the state’s rightful 40% share of revenue, in accordance with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and Articles 112C and 112D of the Federal Constitution.

“Bersatu and Perikatan will focus on efforts to drive Sabah’s development, eradicate poverty, expand basic infrastructure, improve educational achievements for children, provide better job opportunities, increase the people’s income, and protect the welfare of the people in Sabah,” he concluded. – September 6, 2025
