KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is continuing its investigation into former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, with the current focus on assets purportedly owned by him in the United Kingdom.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the commission is working with foreign authorities to verify the matter.

“The investigation involving Mahathir is still ongoing, and we are obtaining detailed information from external parties, particularly the UK authorities, regarding assets believed to be owned by him.

“If such information is obtained, we will announce it later,” he was quoted saying by Bernama today.

In April 2024, Azam confirmed that Mahathir was among those investigated over an asset declaration issue. His sons, Mokhzani and Mirzan, were also served notices under Section 36 of the MACC Act 2009 to declare their wealth.

According to declarations made in January, Mokhzani reported assets worth about RM1 billion while Mirzan declared RM246.2 million.

Separately, Azam addressed a viral allegation by a lawyer who claimed MACC officers had intimidated him during questioning on Sept 2.

“Yes, that was his version, and after he made it viral on social media, I asked my officer directly for clarification, and his version was different.

“So I would say, the best way is to bring this matter to court for certainty. Based on what I received from my officer, the investigation procedures carried out were in accordance with the law and MACC’s standard operating procedures,” Azam said.

The lawyer had alleged in a Facebook post that officers raised their voices and threatened him with detention for non-cooperation. – September 9, 2025
