Zahid pledges support for Malaysians aboard Gaza aid flotilla

Deputy PM to contact 34 local activists as mission reports drone strikes and chemical attacks at sea

KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says he will personally reach out to 34 Malaysians taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a humanitarian convoy bound for Gaza that has reported coming under attack in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Malaysian delegation is among more than 1,000 activists from 44 countries sailing on nearly 70 vessels carrying food, medicine, and messages of peace.

Organisers say the flotilla is just 750 nautical miles from Gaza and aims to break Israel’s blockade by the end of the month.

“They were attacked by drones last night while at sea. The participants were prepared for such incidents and we hope they remain steadfast against threats from Israel,” Zahid told reporters today after launching IKONDESA@Putrajaya in Putrajaya.

Earlier, Zahid reaffirmed Malaysia’s full support for the mission in a video call with Ahmad Musa Al-Nuwayri Kamaruzaman, one of the local representatives onboard.

“This is a humanitarian cause. It reflects the concern of the Malaysian people and government for Palestinians in Gaza,” Zahid said, urging participants to stay strong as they near their destination.

Ahmad Musa said flotilla members had endured repeated harassment, including drone attacks, air explosions, and suspected chemical assaults.

“There were 12 air blasts affecting nine ships, and drones sprayed chemical liquid that caused stinging sensations on the face and eyes, while disrupting communications,” he said. “Some participants were traumatised, but the spirit of the mission remains strong.”

Despite the risks, flotilla leaders vowed to press ahead, calling the voyage a historic act of solidarity with Palestinians living under siege. — September 24, 2025
