Board of Architects cautions against misuse of ‘architect’ title

LAM reminds media and public that professional designation is legally protected under Malaysian law

KUALA LUMPUR – The Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM) has issued a reminder that the title “architect” is legally protected, following recent media usage that blurred the lines between metaphor and professional designation.

LAM president Datuk Ar. Azman Md Hashim stated, in a statement, that the term may only be used by individuals registered with the board and licensed to practise under the Architects Act 1967.

“While the word is sometimes used figuratively in political or journalistic commentary, such usage should not be confused with the designation reserved for qualified professionals in the built environment,” he said.

LAM warned that careless use of the title could erode public appreciation of the profession’s responsibilities and qualifications. The board urged media outlets and public figures to exercise caution when applying the word in non-professional contexts.

“Misuse may inadvertently diminish public understanding of the qualifications and responsibilities of registered architects,” Azman added.

The board said it “remains committed to upholding the integrity of the architectural profession and promoting public awareness of its role in shaping Malaysia’s built environment.” — September 30, 2025
