KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is set to engage in important discussions with major social media platforms in Singapore next week.
The talks will focus on a range of issues, including the implementation of electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) verification and measures to combat online gambling and scams.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that the meeting will address concerns raised by various enforcement and financial authorities, such as the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and the Ministry of Finance.
“Everything will be on the table. We are looking forward to meaningful engagement with the platforms in Singapore next week,” he told reporters during a press conference at Concorde Hotel today.
Fahmi also highlighted that the implementation of eKYC could play a crucial role in reducing social media misuse across Asean, especially in curbing the spread of fake news and the facilitation of criminal activities.
“My hope is this: Asean is a region of many countries, ethnicities, and languages, but the problem of social media misuse is unacceptable. If we are serious about building an Asean Community, we must also ensure that online safety is one of its pillars,” he said.
The minister emphasised that a robust eKYC system could enhance digital security, ensuring safer and more responsible communication for citizens across Asean.
Earlier, Fahmi officiated at the Seminar on Combating Fake News in Asean 2025, where he underscored Malaysia’s role in developing a training module for journalists and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the Better Use of Social Media. – October 2, 2025
