KUALA LUMPUR — Legal tech giant LexisNexis has launched Lexis+ AI in collaboration with Protégé Malaysia, a personalised artificial intelligence assistant tailored to the Malaysian legal system. The tool promises to simplify time-consuming legal tasks while ensuring both accuracy and security.
The launch comes with a strong caution about the risks of using generic AI in the legal field, Malay Mail Online reported.
Gaythri Raman, Managing Director of LexisNexis Southeast Asia and India, pointed out the growing concerns among lawyers who have fallen into trouble by citing AI-generated “hallucinations” in court.
“In the past year alone, over 400 cases have been documented globally where lawyers cited fictitious, AI-generated authorities in court — and half of them came from the US,” she said, underscoring a major challenge the new platform aims to address.
According to Gaythri, this is where Protégé differentiates itself. The platform draws from trusted local sources such as the Malayan Law Journal, and ensures robust data security by encrypting all chats and purging data after log-out to maintain client confidentiality.
“Every legal professional will have a virtual AI assistant who understands you… We don’t retain your data, we don’t use it to train our machines. That’s how seriously we take accuracy, privacy, and security,” Gaythri added.
Protégé is designed to manage a range of tasks, from document analysis to intelligent drafting. Its key features include generating visual timelines from case documents, suggesting follow-up queries, and securely managing files through its Protégé Vault. The platform even self-reviews its drafts to identify inconsistencies.
Early users have praised its efficiency. Hannah Ariffin, Assistant Manager of Legal at MAMEE-Double Decker, said Protégé was able to extract favourable terms from contracts within seconds — a task that typically takes hours.
The Malaysian launch follows successful deployments in the US, UK, Hong Kong, and Australia. It comes at a time when local law firms and in-house counsel are under pressure to deliver more with fewer resources, making AI a critical tool for staying competitive.
For Gaythri, Protégé should not be seen as a competitor but as a collaborator for legal professionals.
“It’s a game changer. Imagine having a trusted buddy by your side — that’s what Protégé is designed to be,” she said. – October 3, 2025
