KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced a transformative RM1.2 billion allocation under Budget 2026, dedicated to restoring Malaysia’s architectural heritage and revitalising urban spaces in the capital.

This move marks a renewed commitment to cultural preservation and creating a more inclusive urban environment.

A central feature of the initiative is a RM600 million investment by Khazanah Nasional for the restoration of Carcosa Seri Negara, a colonial-era mansion that was once returned to Malaysia from British hands.

Anwar described the building as a “symbol of national pride and sovereignty,” alongside the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad Building, which witnessed the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of Merdeka.

The Warisan KL programme will expand to encompass restoration projects for both the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and Kompleks Dayabumi, with PNB’s Merdeka 118 development set to include a new Muzium Tekstil next year, celebrating the richness of Malay textile traditions.

Furthermore, restoration efforts will also extend to the historic Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara, preserving their significant role in the nation’s history.

In a move to foster public-private partnerships, the government has earmarked RM5 million in matching grants to encourage corporate donors, philanthropists, and heritage experts to assist in rejuvenating Muzium Negara.

Contributions to the Museum Department’s Trust Account will be eligible for full tax deductions.

Beyond the preservation of heritage, Anwar underscored the importance of improving urban dignity.

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will allocate RM500 million from its internal funds to upgrade hawker centres and public housing.

This includes RM200 million for rebuilding aging food courts and markets, and RM300 million to repair essential infrastructure, including wiring and lift systems, in Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) units — an initiative prompted by Anwar’s recent visit to Pantai Dalam.

An additional RM60 million will be directed to local councils across the nation to build and refurbish public markets and stalls.

Meanwhile, the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) will invest nearly RM50 million to upgrade 363 business premises nationwide, benefiting over 7,300 entrepreneurs, he said. – October 10, 2025
