KUALA LUMPUR – In a shocking display of cruelty, scammers have taken advantage of public grief over the death of a 16-year-old SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4) student, who was fatally stabbed by a schoolmate earlier this week.
According to China Press, unscrupulous individuals tampered with the teenager’s online obituary by replacing the original QR code intended for condolence contributions to her family with fake codes linked to their own accounts.
The scam came to light after netizens began sharing the victim’s obituary on social media to express their condolences, only to later discover that the payment QR codes had been swapped. The deception was aimed at collecting condolence money from unsuspecting well-wishers.
It is understood that the legitimate e-wallet belonging to the victim’s mother had already reached its transaction limit, meaning genuine transfers could no longer be made.
Despite this, the fake codes continued circulating online, tricking those who wished to help.
The incident has sparked outrage among Malaysians, with many condemning the scammers’ actions as “heartless” and “devoid of humanity,” especially as the victim’s family continues to mourn their only child.
This disturbing twist follows the tragic stabbing of the victim by a 14-year-old schoolmate, who police believe was influenced by violent online content.
