KUALA LUMPUR — Maybank has dismissed a viral social media post claiming to recruit female usherettes for the upcoming Maybank Championship as fake, stressing that the advertisement had no connection to the bank, its organisers, or any authorised vendors.
The false post, which circulated widely online, advertised usher positions for the 2025 Maybank Championship and included racially discriminatory criteria — specifying applicants must be “Chinese, Malay, fair Indian.”
It also listed the event dates as October 30 to November 2 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC) — the actual venue and dates of the women’s golf tournament — further fuelling confusion among the public.
In a statement, Maybank said it was aware of the post and confirmed that the person or account responsible was not linked to the bank, the Maybank Championship, or any official event partner.
“The post used discriminatory language and misused Maybank’s name. It has since been taken down, but we urge everyone to remain vigilant,” the bank said.
Maybank reiterated its commitment to equity and integrity, stating: “Maybank strongly condemns any form of discrimination and remains committed to upholding equity, inclusivity, and integrity in all aspects of our events and partnerships.”
The bank also urged the public not to engage with unverified online advertisements or share personal information through unofficial channels, adding that all legitimate job or volunteer opportunities are announced exclusively via Maybank’s verified platforms.
The 2025 Maybank Championship, offering a record US$3 million (RM12.7 million) prize purse — the highest for any LPGA event in Asia — will feature some of the world’s top golfers, including Thailand’s world number one Jeeno Thitikul and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, the reigning Olympic gold medallist and World Golf Hall of Famer. — October 19, 2025
