KUALA LUMPUR — A pathologist has confirmed that a meat cleaver was the weapon believed used in the brutal killing of a mother and daughter in Kampung Sekolah Juru, Penang, whose bodies were discovered yesterday evening.
Penang Hospital consulting pathologist Datuk Dr Zahari Noor said both victims — Sariya Che Hin, 51, and her 11-year-old daughter, Nur Afrina Alisha Abdul Rahim — died from severe neck injuries inflicted by a sharp weapon.
“Based on the injury patterns, the wounds were consistent with those caused by a meat cleaver, not a knife,” Dr Zahari told reporters at Seberang Jaya Hospital’s forensics unit today, Bernama reported.
He said both victims sustained similar wounds, indicating that they were likely attacked around the same time.
“It’s possible the mother was the first victim,” he added.
Besides the fatal neck injuries, other wounds on their bodies suggested they had tried to defend themselves.
“The injuries show signs of a struggle between the victims and the suspect,” Dr Zahari said.
The victims were discovered by Sariya’s husband, 57, when he returned home around 7.30pm yesterday.
Police have classified the case as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, and the husband has been remanded for seven days until October 25 to assist in investigations.
Autopsies on both victims were completed by late afternoon, and their remains were claimed by relatives for burial at the Masjid Jeneri Muslim Cemetery in Sik, Kedah. — October 19, 2025
