KUALA LUMPUR – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed strong support for Malaysia’s ambition to become a full member of the BRICS group.
Speaking at press conference during his visit to Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN Summit today, Lula called Malaysia a “natural partner” with shared values and growing economic potential.
“I have learned in my life that human behaviour is always considered, but the most important thing is effective action,” he said.
“The main thing you asked me is whether I want Malaysia to be a full member of BRICS. Malaysia will have Brazil’s support to become a full member of BRICS.”
This support comes after Malaysia was officially recognised as one of 13 nations added as a partner country in the BRICS bloc on October 24, 2024. The BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – collectively account for one-fifth of global trade.
Lula, who celebrated his 80th birthday during the visit, spoke warmly of his experience in Malaysia. He praised the country’s hospitality, the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and the openness of the Malaysian people.
“I must say, I am leaving Malaysia with the most positive impression possible,” Lula remarked.
“First of all, the warmth and friendliness of the Malaysian people. Everywhere I go, it feels like I already know everyone. There is always someone smiling, always someone kind. It reminds me a lot of the Brazilian people.”
Lula also spoke about the potential for stronger trade and investment relations between Brazil and Malaysia, urging Brazilian businesses and government leaders to pursue opportunities more aggressively.
“Our trade with Malaysia and Indonesia stands at about US$12 billion, which is modest considering the economic potential of both countries,” he said. “There is a lack of boldness among our entrepreneurs and ministers. Instead of staying home, they must travel the world to sell what Brazil produces and offer.”
In addition, Lula confirmed his government’s support for Malaysia’s full membership bid, aligning with Malaysia’s ambitions to be part of the BRICS bloc and further engage in multipolar global governance.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had signalled Malaysia’s interest in joining BRICS in mid-2024, noting that the group’s goals were in line with Malaysia’s desire for inclusive global governance. Malaysia formally submitted its expression of interest to BRICS in July 2024.
Malaysia is set to officially join the BRICS partnership on January 1, 2025, following the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, which took place in October 2024.
This decision was made under Russia’s chairmanship of the group. On September 2, Anwar confirmed that China had pledged support for Malaysia’s bid for full membership, underscoring the country’s continued role on the global stage. – October 27, 2025
