KUALA LUMPUR – The High Court has granted The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) an injunction against Telegram, immediately blocking the spread of inflammatory content via the Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas channels.
The injunction was sought as a temporary measure in MCMC’s ongoing civil suit against Telegram, pending the hearing of its appeal at the Court of Appeal.
“This ruling marks a significant victory and a decisive step in our commitment to keeping Malaysia’s digital ecosystem safe, responsible, and aligned with the public interest,” the MCMC confirmed in a statement today.
The Erinford Injunction goes beyond specific posts: it not only blocks the content named in the MCMC’s suit but prohibits any similar harmful broadcasts.
Furthermore, the court ordered the permanent closure of the Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas channels and any clone accounts operating with the same methods.
The injunction was secured to combat the online threat posed by false, misleading, and seditious content, ensuring the platform cannot be used to undermine public trust in the nation’s key institutions.
In a clear judicial win for the regulator, the court asserted that the paramount public interest decisively outweighs any private interests, firmly placing the balance of justice with the MCMC.
Weighing the harm, the court found Telegram’s detriment to be minimal compared to the ‘substantial and severe damage’ the content would inflict on national institutions, public confidence, and Malaysia’s societal harmony.
The court explicitly ruled that foreign platforms like Telegram are obligated to respect Malaysia’s legal framework and remain sensitive to its unique social and cultural fabric, regardless of their operational understanding. – October 31, 2025
