KUALA LUMPUR — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a Malaysian man in Sungai Golok, Narathiwat, believed to have been carried out by a former Kelantan footballer, authorities said today.
The victim, 33-year-old Mohd Fuad Fahmie Ghazali, was shot dead outside his home on Saturday evening.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said initial findings suggest the suspect holds dual nationality and fled across the border following the attack.
“We believe the suspect has dual citizenship, but further investigations are ongoing. So far, police have not received the suspect’s photo from Thai authorities,” Yusoff told Bernama, adding that security checks and roadblocks have been tightened along the border.
Hospital reports confirmed that Fuad was shot 18 times, sustaining injuries to the back and neck.
Thai police are investigating the motive.
According to Yusoff, the victim had entered Thailand on November 1 using a border pass and had four previous drug-related offences since 2020.
Family members said Fuad had travelled to Thailand to prepare for the birth of his first child next month. His mother, Zaiton Abdul Rahman, 64, said she was devastated by the loss and urged Thai authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“I was heartbroken to see his body. My daughter-in-law told me the suspect had borrowed money from him,” she said.
The victim’s wife, Wan Fatihah Mat Hussin, 35, said the shooting occurred while Fuad was installing a CCTV camera outside their home. Two men arrived and opened fire with two pistols around 7pm, continuing to shoot even after he collapsed.
“I held him after the first shots, but they kept firing until their ammunition ran out before escaping in a car,” she said.
Fuad was rushed to Sungai Golok Hospital but was pronounced dead at 9pm from internal injuries.
He was buried this afternoon at Kampung Apam Muslim Cemetery in Pasir Mas, Kelantan. — November 2, 2025
