KUALA LUMPUR — Police have upgraded the investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin to a murder probe, heightening scrutiny on Malaysian rapper Namewee, who was present at the scene.
Kuala Lumpur Police Chief CP Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that the case, initially reported as a sudden death, is now being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which covers murder. The police investigation is ongoing.
While the official statement did not directly name the deceased, local media have identified her as 31-year-old Hsieh, also known as Iris Hsieh or the “Nurse Goddess,” who was found dead in a hotel bathroom in Kuala Lumpur on October 22.
Her death attracted widespread attention, especially due to her collaboration with Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, on a video project at the time.
Wee, 42, was arrested at the same hotel where Hsieh’s body was discovered. Authorities recovered nine pills suspected to be ecstasy, and tests later revealed that Wee had ingested multiple illicit substances, including amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine, and THC.
He has been charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 with drug possession and consumption. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison for possession and up to two years for consumption. Bail was set at RM4,000 per charge, and the case is scheduled for mention on December 18.
According to NST online, investigators have identified the individual and are working to track his movements to establish his involvement.
“For now, we regard this person who was last with the victim as being involved in the case.
“We will be calling him in to assist in the investigation.
“Depending on the findings, we will decide whether he should be treated as a suspect,” he was quoted as saying.
Wee has denied any involvement in Hsieh’s death. In a recent Instagram post, he stated, “I believe the truth will eventually come to light after the police complete their investigation,” which he expects to take two to three months.
Meanwhile, Hsieh’s manager, Chris, has called on Wee to provide clarity on the events leading to her death.
“I have never seen her take drugs,” he said, expressing disbelief over the situation and urging for transparency.
Police have confirmed that sexual assault is not a factor in Hsieh’s death. – November 4, 2025
