KUALA LUMPUR – DAP’s Buntong Assemblywoman Thulsi Manogaran has strongly criticised the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) for what she described as a political flip-flop, following the party’s recent resolution to continue supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership while deciding to sever ties with its long-time coalition partner, Barisan Nasional (BN).
At its 79th Annual General Assembly on November 16, 2025, MIC resolved to leave BN after decades of affiliation but committed to backing Anwar Ibrahim until the end of his term.
“This flip-flop reeks of self-serving opportunism, not real principles,” Thulsi said, pointing to the contradiction in MIC’s stance.
She noted that the party had previously emphasised its loyalty to BN, calling it a family bond essential for Indian interests.
Just last year, MIC had publicly expressed dissatisfaction with its position within BN, accusing the coalition of treating it like “stepchildren.” Yet now, the party is pledging support to the Prime Minister while seeking to exit BN, she said.
“This move shows blatant hypocrisy,” Thulsi added, questioning the rationale behind MIC’s continued support for Anwar.
She also expressed confusion over reports suggesting that the party was in talks with the opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, adding to its image of opportunism and untrustworthiness.
Thulsi reaffirmed DAP’s commitment to backing genuine supporters of the MADANI agenda, which focuses on inclusivity and reform.
She warned that MIC’s actions could destabilise coalitions and damage voter unity.
“They should stop this nonsense and focus on national good, not personal gains,” she said, stressing DAP’s goal of building a stable Unity Government for all Malaysians.
Meanwhile, BN Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi responded to MIC’s resolution with a conciliatory tone.
“I respect whatever decision made by the delegates and the MIC leadership. Whatever decision they make, we will accept it with an open mind and an open heart,” Zahid said, speaking after the opening ceremony of the Global Chinese Economic and Technology Summit (GCET) 2025 at Wisma MCA.
Zahid indicated that while he had been closely monitoring the situation within MIC, he had no intention of intervening in the party’s internal matters.
On BN Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan’s statement that a meeting would be arranged with MIC’s leadership before a final decision is made, Zahid responded, “That is the best possible approach, and whatever decision is to be made is entirely up to the party concerned.”
At the MIC convention, delegates unanimously voted to approve three resolutions, including the proposal to leave BN and apply to join Perikatan Nasional.
However, the convention left the final decision in the hands of MIC President Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran and the party’s top leadership. – November 19, 2025
