Don’t let floods disrupt SPM exams: Govt

KUALA LUMPUR — The government has instructed the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to work closely with state education authorities to ensure that Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates affected by floods are able to sit for their examinations without disruption.

In a statement, Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN), Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, said preparedness and seamless coordination are vital as the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) continues to affect several states with escalating flood risks.

He said Nadma must prioritise immediate logistical assistance for students facing mobility challenges.

“Nadma must work with the State Education Departments to ensure flood-affected SPM candidates can attend their exam centres,” he said.

“This includes coordinating with the Civil Defence Force (APM) to provide transportation or relocating students to hostels if necessary.”

He said the focus is to guarantee that no student misses their exam due to evacuation or transportation issues, emphasising that all necessary resources should be deployed without delay.

Shamsul Azri also reminded disaster agencies that their coordination must take the upcoming Sabah state election into account.

“Nadma must ensure disaster management is well coordinated with relevant agencies ahead of the Sabah State Election so that the election process is not disrupted,” he said.

He added that Nadma, together with the State Disaster Management Committees (JPBN) and District Disaster Management Committees (JPBD), must ensure a smooth disaster response that also safeguards essential public processes.

To support both disaster relief and operational stability, Shamsul Azri called for the activation of all State and District Disaster Operations Control Centres (PKOB).

“We must take rapid action based on the needs at the ground level,” he said, urging closer inter-agency collaboration as flood responses intensify.

Thousands of residents across multiple states remain displaced due to the floods, with operations ongoing to manage evacuations, aid distribution and essential services. November 24, 2025
