KUALA LUMPUR – Sovereign investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and its four subsidiaries have secured a court order today against Low Taek Jho’s sister, Low May Lin, and his close associate, Eric Tan Kim Loong, for sums of US$809,319 (RM3.3mil) and US$2,795,333,000 (RM11.55bil) respectively.
The High Court’s Justice Mahazan Mat Taib granted a default judgment for both amounts after ruling that 1MDB had successfully proven its case in its civil suit against the two individuals, Malay Mail Online reported.
The judgment was issued in default as Tan and May Lin, having been served with court documents, failed to respond, file any pleadings, or attend the trial.
In her brief grounds for judgment, the judge highlighted that the evidence presented demonstrated that former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who also served as the finance minister at the time, exercised de facto control over 1MDB’s significant financial decisions.
She further noted that Jho Low, also known as Low Taek Jho, operated as Najib’s proxy and shadow director, despite holding no official role within 1MDB.
“The identities of the recipients, the structure of the transactions, and the roles of Jho Low and Datuk Seri Najib establish that the funds reaching Tan Kim Loong and Low May Lin were tainted proceeds,” the judge stated when reading her decision.
In May 2021, 1MDB and its subsidiaries—1MDB Energy Holdings Limited, 1MDB Energy Limited, 1MDB Energy (Langat) Limited, and Global Diversified Investment Company Limited (formerly known as 1MDB Global Investments Limited)—filed a civil suit against Jho Low, his family members—including father Tan Sri Low Hock Peng, brother Low Taek Szen, sister May Lin, and mother Goh Gaik Ewe—and Eric Tan.
The suit accused the defendants of fraudulently concealing, misappropriating, and knowingly receiving funds belonging to 1MDB, as well as claims of unjust enrichment, breach of trust, and conspiracy.
By November 2022, 1MDB and its subsidiaries had obtained a default judgment against Jho Low, his father, and his brother. In May 2024, they also secured a default judgment against Low’s mother. – November 25, 2025
