KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed receiving the resignation of his senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, following claims of an attempt to undermine the image of the Madani government.
In a statement, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for Shamsul’s service as the head of PKR Melaka, noting that he had contributed positively during his tenure.
“Regarding the allegations, I wish to stress that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is fully independent in conducting an investigation, without any external interference,” the Prime Minister stated.
“The Madani government remains steadfast in its principles of transparency and integrity, and we are providing space for the investigation to proceed in accordance with the law,” he added.
The country was caught off guard yesterday when Shamsul tendered his resignation as the Prime Minister’s senior political secretary, claiming that there had been attempts to tarnish his reputation with matters that could damage the credibility of the Madani government.
“As a result, I have made the decision to defend myself from these attacks,” Shamsul said.
Shamsul had previously been embroiled in controversy over his involvement in issuing a letter of support for a contractor in a hospital project.
Shortly eafter, Malaysiakini reported that controversial businessman Albert Tei had claimed to have spent RM629,000 on Shamsul, including renovations on a property linked to the PKR leader, as well as providing premium cigars and a custom-made suit.
Tei, who was previously charged in June over bribery allegations involving two Sabah state assemblymen in relation to a mineral licensing scandal, has been at the centre of the latest allegations.
The opposition coalition, Perikatan Nasional (PN), has called for an investigation by the MACC into Shamsul’s alleged involvement in corruption and abuse of power, following the claims made by Tei and the letter of support tied to him. – November 26, 2025
