KUALA LUMPUR – MIC has clarified that it did not submit an application letter to join Perikatan Nasional (PN), but instead sent an inquiry seeking further details before making any decision, said party secretary-general Datuk S. Ananthan.
He explained that the letter was dispatched four days ahead of MIC’s annual general meeting, with the aim of gaining a clearer understanding of PN.
“The letter focused on several issues, including the nature of the party’s potential membership, entry processes and MIC’s potential status as a PN component member,” Malaysiakini reported him as saying.
Ananthan’s remarks came in response to PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s claim yesterday that MIC had submitted an application to join the opposition coalition. Muhyiddin said the matter would be decided collectively by the PN Supreme Council at its upcoming meeting, adding that all component parties were supportive of MIC joining in principle.
Ananthan clarified that MIC’s letter was sent after several PAS leaders, including deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, invited the party to meet and consider joining PN.
He added that MIC had specifically asked PN to elaborate on its commitment to Indian development, particularly in education, socioeconomic matters and political representation.
“We need complete information before making a decision on the party’s direction. We want to determine if MIC will be automatically received, or if there are conditions that need to be met,” he said. – Disember 1, 2025
