KUALA LUMPUR – Former Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, vowed to clear his name after being charged with four counts of corruption in court today.
Speaking to the media after being released on bail of RM150,000, Shamsul Iskandar said he has fully cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) from the beginning.
“Insya-Allah, I will prove my innocence. We will follow the legal process through the courts. I will uphold the principles of the law, and from the start, I have fully cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) throughout the investigation,” he said.
He was accompanied by his lawyers, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad and Yusmadi Yusoff.
Earlier, he was charged at the Sessions Court here with four counts of corruption amounting to RM176,829.03, involving the approval of mineral exploration licenses in Sabah.
Shamsul Iskandar, 50, also known as Yusre Mohd Akin, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out one by one before Judge Suzana Hussin.
At the time of the alleged offences, Shamsul Iskandar, then Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, was accused of agreeing to receive a bribe of RM100,000 in cash from businessman Albert Tei Jiann Cheing, 37, at a hotel parking lot on Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, Kuala Lumpur on November 24, 2023.
The bribe was allegedly given to encourage him to help Tei’s companies obtain approval for mineral exploration licenses in Sabah, despite the matter being unrelated to the duties of the accused.
Shamsul Iskandar was also charged with receiving a cash bribe of RM40,000 from Tei for the same purpose at a premise on Jalan Medang Serai, Bukit Bandaraya, on January 29, 2024.
He faced two additional charges of receiving bribes in the form of furniture and electrical appliances worth RM14,580.03 and RM22,249 from the same individual for the same purpose.
All offences were allegedly committed at premises on Jalan Medang Serai, Bukit Bandaraya, between December 7, 2023 and January 31, 2024, and at Jalan P14a 1/1, Precinct 14, Putrajaya, between February 26 and March 5, 2024. – December 4, 2025
