KUALA LUMPUR – The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has directed the Custodial Death and Criminal Investigation Unit (USJKT) of Bukit Aman to immediately complete the investigation report on the death of M. Manisegaran while in custody.
In its statement, the AGC said this is to enable the case to be referred to the Coroner’s Court to determine the cause and reason of death.
“The full investigation report is expected to be submitted to this Department soon.
“This Department remains committed to ensuring that every death in custody case is handled transparently, comprehensively and in accordance with the laws in force,” it said.
Earlier, the media had reported that Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo urged the AGC to clarify allegations regarding a lorry driver who died in police custody but was not investigated after more than nine months.
Manisegaran, a lorry driver, died on February 22 after being detained at the Sunway Police Station in Petaling Jaya.
According to his wife, there were injury marks on his chest, as well as broken teeth and blood in Manisegaran’s eyes.
Meanwhile, former Klang MP Charles Santiago demanded a fully independent investigation into the death of M. Manisegaran, criticising what he described as a culture of impunity within the police in cases of custodial deaths.
He also cited data from the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC), which showed 430 deaths in police custody between 2011 and 2021.
These figures, he said, call for urgent reforms and the establishment of an independent oversight body with powers to investigate and prosecute misconduct. – 6 December 2025
