KUALA LUMPUR – PAS Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has hailed AirAsia’s renewed cabin crew uniform policy, which allows female staff to wear the hijab while on duty as a profound reflection of the industry’s understanding of constitutionally guaranteed religious freedom.
The decision, he said, is not only aligned with religious requirements and the sanctity of earning a livelihood but also consistent with Malaysia’s demographic reality, where over 60 per cent of citizens are Muslim.
In a statement, the Kubang Kerian Member of Parliament declared that the move should become a benchmark for all national airlines.
“In the context of the modern economy, inclusive policies that respect the religious and cultural needs of employees are proven to boost motivation, job satisfaction, and corporate image,” Tuan Ibrahim said.
“Many global companies are moving towards becoming a ‘faith-friendly workplace,’ and AirAsia’s step places Malaysia in line with this development.”
AirAsia is expected to implement the uniform policy renewal, which was driven by staff feedback, starting next Ramadan.
The airline’s cabin crew previously wore the hijab only on specific routes mandated by local regulations, such as Jeddah.
At the same time, in a related and more controversial call, Tuan Ibrahim urged the aviation industry to re-evaluate the provision of liquor on all domestic flights.
He said that limiting or halting alcohol service is necessary for: Safety considerations and reducing the risk of in-flight disruption; alignment with social norms in a country where Islam is the religion of the Federation and meeting the preference of the majority of local consumers.
“Countries with more conservative social norms have already limited or ceased provision without affecting industry competitiveness. Malaysia should consider a similar approach,” he added.
His remarks follow an announcement last month by Transport Minister Anthony Loke that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has already ceased serving alcohol on domestic flights and international flights shorter than three hours. – December 6, 2025
