KUALA LUMPUR – Residents and visitors in Johor Bahru will soon be able to enjoy free rides aboard a self-driving bus, designed to take passengers to various attractions around the city.
Johor Bahru mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad announced that the initiative is one of three smart city projects being developed by the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB), with a RM2.78 million budget allocated by the Digital Ministry, the Star reported.
“We are currently in the procurement stage,” he said.
“We hope to begin operations by the first quarter of next year, in time for Visit Johor 2026.”
MBJB is collaborating with Tourism Johor and the Johor Public Transport Corporation to determine the most suitable routes for the 20-seater autonomous bus, which is estimated to cost RM800,000.
“The bus will likely operate around the city centre, but the exact route is still being finalised. Our goal is to ensure it is convenient for both residents and tourists, providing easy access to popular attractions,” Mohd Haffiz explained.
He also confirmed that the bus will use advanced technologies such as sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G connectivity to navigate safely.
In addition to the autonomous bus, MBJB is also working on acquiring mobile, solar-powered closed-circuit television (CCTV) units and drones to enhance city management.
“The CCTV units will aid in monitoring, especially for issues like illegal dumping. The drones, equipped with AI, will help in tracking flood-prone areas, illegal factories, polluted rivers, and traffic congestion,” he added. – December 9, 2025
