KUALA LUMPUR — An ambulance without a patient on board was involved in a multi-vehicle crash at a traffic light junction in Setapak this morning, leaving one motorcyclist seriously injured.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the accident occurred at about 8.10 am at the Jalan Usahawan 6 traffic light intersection.
“Preliminary investigations found that a car travelling straight from the Wangsa Maju direction was moving on a green light when a Malaysian Red Crescent Society (PBSM) ambulance, which had its siren and emergency lights activated, entered the junction against a red light from the Jalan Kilang direction and collided with the car,” Zamzuri said in a statement.
He said the impact caused the ambulance to skid and crash into several motorcycles and another car that was stopped at the traffic lights.
The crash involved the ambulance driver, a 34-year-old Malay man, with a 24-year-old Chinese male passenger, a 30-year-old Chinese man driving a car, four male motorcyclists, and a nine-year-old girl who was a pillion rider on one of the motorcycles.
Zamzuri said a review of viral video footage circulating on social media confirmed that the ambulance had its siren and emergency lights switched on at the time of the incident.
“However, the ambulance driver is still required to slow down when approaching and entering a signalised junction,” he said, adding that the case is still under investigation.
As a result of the collision, a 40-year-old Malay male motorcyclist suffered serious injuries, including a fractured right thigh, while other victims sustained minor injuries such as bruises and body pain.
A 42-year-old Malay woman who was driving one of the cars was not injured.
All injured victims were taken to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for treatment. Zamzuri said two of the motorcyclists involved have yet to lodge police reports as they are still receiving medical treatment.
He added that the PBSM ambulance did not have a patient at the time and was responding to a call to pick up a patient at the PPR Gombak Setia area.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police have urged witnesses to come forward to assist investigations by contacting the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or any nearby police station. – December 22, 2025
