KUALA LUMPUR – The Perlis State Assembly is facing uncertainty after several assemblymen reportedly withdrew their support for Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.

Currently hospitalised in Kuala Lumpur due to chest pain, Mohd Shukri’s position as the state’s leader is now in question.

Sources told The Star that a number of assemblymen submitted statutory declarations to the Perlis Ruler last week, stating they no longer support his leadership.

With a total of 15 assembly seats, the state is primarily represented by PAS, which holds nine, and Bersatu with five. The sole opposition member is PKR’s Gan Ay Ling.

On December 20, PAS Perlis issued a statement calling for party members and supporters to reaffirm their backing for Mohd Shukri.

The statement, made by PAS Perlis Commissioner Ahmad Ali, underscored the strong commitment shown by the Perlis government under Mohd Shukri’s leadership, particularly in areas such as good governance, the welfare of the people, and the defence of Islam and the interests of the ummah.

Ahmad further urged PAS members to reject any attempts to disrupt the stability of the state government, while reinforcing the need for unity, discipline, and cooperation to ensure the continued success of the administration.

This development comes after Mohd Shukri’s defeat in internal PAS elections.

He failed to secure the position of Yang Dipertua PAS Arau and was also unsuccessful in his bid for a spot on the PAS Central Committee. Despite this, PAS appointed him as part of the committee, and he later became the party’s Perlis Commissioner, a role now occupied by Ahmad.

In recent reports, it was revealed that PAS Perlis had denied receiving any information regarding the appointment of the party’s daily committee members.

A meeting held on October 7 led to a reshuffling of leadership positions, which saw the appointment of three deputy commissioners, with Mohd Shukri notably absent from the list. Instead, former Mentri Besar Shahidan Kassim, a former Umno leader and current Arau MP, was included.

Ahmad reiterated that PAS Perlis remains committed to supporting Mohd Shukri’s leadership, emphasising the importance of maintaining a government based on integrity, justice, and the welfare of the people.

In response, Mohd Shukri expressed his gratitude for Ahmad’s support, affirming his dedication to continuing the state’s development agenda and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.

“Insya-Allah, with a spirit of togetherness and sincere effort, we will continue moving forward for a more prosperous, integrated, and blessed Perlis,” he said. – December 22, 2025
