KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu has distanced itself from the political crisis currently plaguing Perlis.
The party’s President, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, said the party did not instruct any of its representatives in Perlis to sign any Statutory Declarations (SDs) against the state leadership.
“I’ve been following the political crisis in Perlis following the resignation of Mohd Shukri Ramli as the Menteri Besar.
“I’m confident that the parties within Perikatan Nasional have their own methods for managing any arising issues prudently, in order to ensure the stability and continuity of the coalition’s administration in Perlis,” Muhyiddin said in a statement today.
“Bersatu will seek an explanation from Perlis Bersatu assemblypersons to find out the real issue,” Muhyiddin added.
He stressed that Bersatu would only submit the name of its candidate for the Menteri Besar position upon the instruction of the Perlis Palace.
The party also respects the discretionary powers of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, in appointing the Menteri Besar, as well as the state Constitution in the matter, Muhyiddin said.
“Perikatan Nasional respects the position of PAS as the party leading the coalition in Perlis.
“I hope the issue concerning the Menteri Besar position in Perlis can be resolved soon in the spirit of the Perikatan Nasional family,” said Muhyiddin.
Mohd Shukri resigned from his post as the Perlis Menteri Besar on Thursday, citing health reasons.
The resignation came after three of his party colleagues cum assemblymen, namely Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji), were sacked from PAS, for reportedly submitting statutory declarations to the Raja of Perlis last week, withdrawing their support for Mohd Shukri’s leadership. The trio joined five other state PN assemblymen in the mutiny.
Mohd Shukri later bemoaned the trio’s “betrayal” and said he was wrong to have “trusted them too much”. – December 27, 2025
