KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is in stable condition after sustaining a fracture to his right hip.
His press secretary, Sufi Yusof, said this in a message shared via the official Dr M Media Updates WhatsApp group, reported Bernama.
“Tun is expected to be admitted for the next few weeks for treatment and observation,” he reportedly said.
The 100-year-old statesman was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) around 9.30 am today following a fall at his residence earlier in the morning. He was conscious upon arrival and is expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks for treatment and observation.
Speaking to Bernama, Mahathir’s daughter, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, said the matter is serious but not life-threatening.
“It is serious, but it’s not dangerous. For his age, everything is relative… he’s fine. We will issue a fuller statement later with more details,” she said at the IJN lobby.
Dr Mahathir, who served as Malaysia’s fourth and seventh prime minister, was previously treated at IJN on July 13, 2025, for fatigue but was discharged the same day.– January 6, 2026
