KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim is scheduled to meet the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, tomorrow to brief His Royal Highness on the implementation of a modern pig farming project in the state.

The briefing comes after the Sultan expressed serious concern and disagreement over the state government’s decision to allow pig farming operations in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat, from this year before relocating them to Bukit Tagar in 2030.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the meeting will provide an opportunity for the state government to explain the decision made by the State Executive Council (MMKN), including proactive measures by enforcement agencies to ensure environmental safety and cleanliness without compromise.

“The MMKN has decided to tighten operational requirements for pig farming in Selangor, with a focus on improved waste management to prevent negative impacts on the drainage system,” he said in a statement last night, as reported by Bernama.

Amirudin said the initiative aims to safeguard public health, protect the environment and drainage infrastructure, and prevent odour pollution, while ensuring the industry operates safely without harming communities or offending local sensitivities.

He added that the decision forms part of a structured and balanced approach to managing the sensitive issue, as outlined by Izham during a press conference last Thursday.

“The approach seeks to meet community needs while tightening controls towards a medium- and long-term solution in a more systematic manner.

“The state government values the concerns, advice and guidance of the Selangor Ruler in addressing this matter and prays for His Royal Highness’ continued good health to guide and protect the state with wisdom,” Amirudin said.

In a statement posted on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page yesterday, Sultan Sharafuddin said large-scale pig farming was inappropriate, insensitive and not in line with Selangor’s demographic reality as a Muslim-majority state, and could pose long-standing environmental problems, including foul odours, river pollution and persistent fly infestations.

The Sultan stressed that he was not entirely opposed to the project but said comprehensive market studies and rational planning must be carried out before any final decision is made.– January 11, 2026
