KUALA LUMPUR – Proton fans have reason to celebrate as the national automaker officially opens bookings for its debut Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), the Proton Emas 7.
With a tentative price range of RM110,000 to RM130,000, this marks a significant step forward for Proton in the electrified vehicle market.
The Proton Emas 7, based on the Geely Galaxy Starship, is a C-segment SUV that offers a combined driving range of over 1,100 km. It boasts a claimed fuel consumption of just 4.3L per 100 km and an electric-only range of up to 170 km (NEDC), making it an ideal option for daily commutes.
Available in three variants – Prime, Premium, and Premium Plus – the Emas 7 comes with an impressive 10-year maintenance cost of RM8,000, while the total fuel and charging cost over the same period is estimated at RM21,200. This makes the vehicle an affordable choice for many Malaysians, with annual maintenance costs averaging RM2,920.
For charging, the Premium and Premium Plus variants feature 18.4 kWh LFP batteries, which take under 20 minutes to recharge from 30% to 80%. Meanwhile, the Prime variant is equipped with a larger 29.8 kWh battery, requiring less than 16 minutes for the same charging cycle.
The Emas 7 also caters to families, offering a generous 528-litre boot that expands to 2,065 litres with the rear seats folded. With 30 storage compartments throughout the cabin, including a 10.8-litre under-console space, the SUV is ideal for everything from grocery runs to long-distance family trips.
Inside, the SUV features a 13.8-inch W-HUD, LED instrument cluster, and a 10.25-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interior also includes ventilated seats and a flat rear floor, providing ample knee room, while 16 Wanos surround sound speakers ensure a premium audio experience.
In terms of safety, the Proton Emas 7 is equipped with seven airbags and 15 Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Life Presence Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).
The vehicle is powered by an 11-in-1 Dedicated Hybrid Transmission system, with a dual-motor setup that generates a combined output of 193 kW and 262 Nm of torque. In EV or series-hybrid mode, the P1 motor charges the battery or powers the P3 motor, which drives the wheels.
Bookings for the Proton Emas 7 are now open, with a RM99 booking fee and a RM500 rebate for the first 5,000 customers. – January 14, 2026
