Zahid backs down on ‘Team B’ claim, says DAP has no factions

Clarification comes after DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke denied the existence of any factions during the Selangor DAP Annual Convention 2026

KUALA LUMPUR — Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has clarified that there is no “Team A” or “Team B” within DAP, stressing that his earlier remarks were not meant to imply internal divisions within the party.

The clarification follows DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook’s denial of any factions during the Selangor DAP Annual Convention 2026 in Klang today. Zahid said he agreed with Loke’s explanation.

“What I meant in my speech at the closing of the 2025 UMNO General Assembly was to highlight differing statements from a small segment of DAP leaders on the issue. These do not reflect DAP’s official stance,” he told reporters after the People’s Progressive Party annual general meeting.

Zahid said his earlier mention of a so-called “Team B” referred to certain statements targeting Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh. He added that Loke had clarified the matter, noting it reflected only a minor difference of opinion within DAP and not the party’s official position.

“If that statement offended DAP, I withdraw the reference. It was never my intention to suggest that there are two camps within the party,” he added.

He also reminded that differing opinions within a party should not be treated as its official stance, particularly when they do not amount to formal policy or decisions.

Earlier, Loke, speaking at the Selangor DAP Annual Convention 2026, denied claims that a “Team B” within the party had issued statements contrary to DAP’s leadership.— January 18, 2026
